Abstract
The incidence rate of cancer, such as breast cancer, is increasing rapidly. Usually, a surgery is performedto remove the cancerous cells. Edema is a common side effect of such a surgery. Thus, theability to quantitatively measure edema is essential in treating cancer. Many solutions were proposedto detect and measure edema, but they are not practical as they require a long time to make a measurement.Furthermore, most of them are only applicable after edema is fully developed. In this study,we propose a novel edema detector which can quantify edema even if it is not fully developed. Theproposed detector is based on the fact that when edema occurs, the amount of lymph increases, which leads to the change in the elasticity of the skin. Thus, by deforming and recording the restorationtime of the skin, one can estimate the change in the elasticity of the skin. This method can effectivelyand reliably detect the presence and amount of edema. We built a prototype of the proposed detector, and we were able to confirm that the restoration time varies with the elasticity of skin. This confirmsthat the proposed device can be used to quantify edema.
